"The Dying Chauffeur" (1952 Allard J2X)
30 × 40 × 1 1/2 in, Acrylic on Canvas, 2025
I created this painting for a wonderful exhibition that partnered a poem with an original painting. I chose:
"The Dying Chauffeur"
by Rudyard Kipling
Wheel me gently to the garage, since my car and I must part—
No more for me the record and the run.
That cursèd left-hand cylinder the doctors call my heart
Is pinking past redemption—I am done!
They’ll never strike a mixture that’ll help me pull my load.
My gears are stripped—I cannot set my brakes.
I am entered for the finals down the timeless untimed Road
To the Maker of the makers of all makes!
This poem spoke to me as I am not in my mid 50's and am finding my path in life after a corporate career, caring for extended family, raising a child, traveling with my dear husband of over 35yrs, and now as a professional artist. Like a race car, we speed through life until one day our racing is over.
This amazing Allard was photographed at Amelia Island Concours by myself. I didn't want to capture the entire vehicle, but just give a hint of where it had been and the "shoes" (tires) it used to travel.
Painting available through 33 Contemporary Gallery. Includes a Letter of Authenticity.
