Red Volkswagen Beetle
“Red Volkswagen Beetle”, 15″x20″ mixed media (watercolor, gouache, India Ink and blocks) on watercolor board. 2016.

There is something about a Volkswagen Beetle that makes people smile. So many of us had this as a first car, or knew someone that did. We have fond memories of going to the beach, seeing how many friends we could cram into it, and “adjusting” the engine by giving it a light kick.

This piece was created on paper watercolor board during the EAST Austin Studio Tour. I wanted it to be whimsical and more illustrated than my usual canvas works. This style is how I create my architectural/cityscape paintings. Fun, relaxed, and vibrant. Like the VW bug, it is cheerful and brings a smile to your face.
