Before I became a vehicle artist, my husband belonged to the local Land Rover group and drove his 1990 Defender 90 off roading. It seemed like every other weekend we were on the trails out in the Texas countryside. Those days were a lot of fun.
While on vacation in California, we attended a Cars & Coffee event in Los Angeles. This well loved 1965 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 was parked on the outskirts of the show, and looked ready to take on the trails. I loved how there were rusted pits from rocks and wear on the body showing that the owner loved adventure. This car was meant to be driven and enjoyed.
Creating this painting was a lot of fun for me as it stepped away from my typically vibrant color palette. The terra cotta, olive drab, warm browns, and pale yellows brought this piece to life. I am also incorporating more abstract backgrounds known as bokeh into my works. I want the vehicle to stand out, but also give you an idea of where it was when I photographed it. Our vehicles are meant to be enjoyed and driven. No matter where we are.
